2008 article on YFm magazine
DJ Cleo is untouchable at the moment, and he knows it. He is still making big waves in the charts, clubs and newspapers. This is also the man who not long Arthur Mafokate of stealing his number-one i Nawe from his latest album E'skhaleni Extension on its way to reaching double platinum status,
The stealing of ideas and beats is rather ramp entertainment industry. It seems pretty easy whe artists give their demos to big names in the hope o: get their "big break" into the music biz. A radio presenter, who wanted to remain anonymous, suggested the possibility of this happening and insinuated that a young, budding producer probably gave the same track to both Mafokate and Cleo, Cleo decided to add his hit-making formula to the sample, and N'gihamba Nawe was the final product. On hearing it, Arthur supposedly dug into his archives to find the same sample to
mix. With all the speculation, it was time to get the story from the horse's mouth. The thing everybody wants to understand is how Arthur could possibly have gotten his hands on Cleo's work? He simply says, "I don"t know. Ask Arthur."
So we decided to approach D-rex, a well-known producer supposedly dug into his archives to find the same sample to mix.

With all the speculation, it was time to get the story from the horse's mouth. The thing everybody wants to understand is how Arthur could possibly have gotten his hands on Cleo's work? He simply says, "I don"t know. Ask Arthur."
So we decided to approach D-rex, a well-known producer and Kabelo's partner at Faith records, to find out more about the production process, and how artists can claim ownership of other artist's tracks. D-rex gave
a general explanation of how songs can sound similar, explaining: "Before computers, before beat makers/ producers and sampling, if two songs sounded the same it was ***** umed that there was plagiarism involved. In the old days, the odds of two composers composing exactly the same song were astronomically slim. However, in modern cases it's not as clear-cut. The methods of composing music have drastically changed"
He went on to explain how library samples are often the cause of similar-sounding songs. "When a producer samples a track, the new song sounds a lot like the original it was sampled from, but usually has been reworked to include modern beats and new vocals. The new song is now a hybrid. This is not only common but normal these days. Another
possibility is that both producers have used the same sample in a new composition." As logical as all these reasons are, the timing of both tracks was surely not a coincidence. "Its unlikely, but possible," says D- Rex. "The more likely scenario is that one of the two producers heard the other producer's version and copied his idea."
DJ Cleo is still furious over the matter and seems annoyed by the media who, he claims, "tried to nail [him]". He adds: "You could swear that they're on Arthur's payroll. The public's not stupid; they know what's real, hence they bought my album. Like Zuma, I came out tops. I have been vindicated!" Okaaay.
Moving on... Does Cleo think that the music scene has become a battle field, featuring 999 versus Will of Steel? Let's not forget that Arthur's artist Pantsula attacked Cleo's Brickz in one of his songs, which sparked a new round.of label bashing. He says, "WOS versus 999? Please, it's like having the national football team of Brazil play against Garankuwa United. Come on lets get real here."

Do you remember when Roca Fella Fires Beanie Seagal ,Freeway and Peedi Crakk

Former Roc-A-Fella artists Beanie Seagal, Freeway and Peedi Crakk are breathing and spitting fire at the same time because of the manner in which their former boss Jay-Z kicked them off the label - through an A& guy. Beanie and Freeway featured in Jay's historical Madison Square gardens performance Fade To Black and were seen to be some of Jay's closest ******* ociates alongside Memphis Bleek. So ******* was Peedi Crakk that he put out a diss track going at Jay and wished him a personal ******* filled with pictures of the fallen prince. "I have been watching him for a long time and seeing how he does business. Hov only takes care of Hov," he told an online magazine recently.

Peedi figures the firing is actually a good thing as he is a free spirit now and can push his hustle on without the record label red tape. "I'm not mad at Jay, i don't care about Jay, he doesn't exist to me, I'm no longer making music for Def Jam and Jay-Z and the A&Rs at Roc-A-Fella.. The kind of music that would have to cater to their air," he said, "I can get back to making that Peedi Crakk music and not
that Peedi Peedi." He said he'd only gone along with tweaking his sound in the first place because he trusted Jay-Z's judgement. "Jay-Z only knows how to do good for Jay-Z. As far as helping other artists' careers, he doesn't have a ******* clue. Neither does Def Jam."

PROKID - THE SAGA CONTINUES
I always like to be the guy that doesn't imitate

How has the response been for the new track?

The response has been great so far. I re- ceived a funny tweet saying "I don't know why people are going crazy over the track. Cuz Pro never disappoints. (Laughs). When I was reading it, I was like "aaaah, what is this guy saying?"

What was the idea behind the "new flow"?

It was just to show a bit of versatility you know? I was stepping out of the comfort zone. It was a bit of a challenge though.

Tell us about the album "Continual"

The ******* le of the album was inspired by a conversation I had with my grandfather. I didn't even know he was involved in exile. So we were just there just chilling and talking about giving a new and balanced sound that doesn't really segregate or put any other genre on the other side of the mar- gin. I'm messing with house/bounce beats and doing songs with Spikiri and even some tunes for the ladies. So it's a nice all-round album that is moving on to the next level.

Do you feel any pressure from the new gen- eration of rappers coming out?

Not really because my music is my culture and my religion. It's my lifestyle. I always like to be the guy that doesn't imitate.

Where do you want to see hip hop going and where is it in reality?

Currently, the people that have something in their heads when it comes to Hip Hop like AKA, Cashtime FAM, Khuli Chana, are doing something. We created our little society of our own be not forcing anything down people's throats. We're trying to bring the money and attract the corporate, Teargas, AMA Kip Kip and even with myself doing Fish Eagle. We're doing Miller tours to Mi- ami but at least we've got the corporate on board. It's not like before when we were knocking on doors and hustling for our own buses and sound. Now we act as mediators between the guys with the product and the message they trying to put out there. Every time we interact, numbers double and triple. At first it was farfetched now it's
lifting and upgrading.

Has that generation of rappers of yourself, Skwatta and Selwyn stuck together over time?

The cool thing about our era is that we never looked down on anyone who was doing it. Maybe there was a handful that had an issue within Kwaito but no one can deny that was our sound. We never showed any level of disrespect and we always bowed down to those big dudes that had been in the industry before. They're our mentors and reference. The youngsters don't want to listen (laughs) so we're trying to consti- tute it in that manner. We tell them if you want act stupid, sharp but eventually the big boys call us and ask"What do you think
of this boy?" So we always got to polist them anyway.

Do you ever feel that Kwaito IS hip hop, with the relationship being so strong?

There are a few Kwaito acts that have managed to branch out. It's funny be- cause •their saying "eeish... We should have" it's unfortunate because hip hop is attitude you know? So when we came with that attitude, they thought it was towards everybody. Until we started visiting the Gallo studios for the chill sessions and they realized we were cool. It was like Birdman doing things 18 years ago with Juvenile and then coming back with Wayne. Now it's all one big family. The head of the house has all the knowledge you need so you need a guru like that. So it's nice to see us all come together.

What goals do you want to achieve and accomplish as a musician and now, as o businessman?

My highlight would be me starting my own establishment for me and the gents to say "This our little trust fund". With that, we can create opportunity for youngsters who are starting out. I personally never finish a proj- ect without finding at least ONE new pro- ducer. That's why we positioned our busi- ness strategy the way we have. You must seek talent and admire it, mentor it, record it, then take it to the public. Those that are interested will know that once I reach that level, l'm sure someone is going to holler. So we can't keep hip hop to ourselves.

How is Red ******* on doing under your wing?

He's making money (laughs). He's a good example of someone who works and is serious. He is producing and writing for house music vocalists. There is a growth and it's at God's speed. Guys used to go to him for just a verse, now they go for. everything.

Is there anything else you would like try out as a musician?

Music wise, I'm done for now. The album is out sp it's just me promoting. Everything else is just ground work. I'm trying more to be the man on the ground and do work- shops as well as motivate. As rappers we often come off as a myth, whereby we are nowhere to be found. Every now and then we have to go back and show guys that it's real. Without our people, there is no support.

Artist : Mo'lemi
Album : Amantsi
Record lable : CCP Records / EMI
A politically concious farmer-come-rapper, Mo'lemi is yet another strong branch of the Motswako family tree. However, listening to the album, you can hear that he bares different fruits from the rest. The album begins with a rich traditional intro as the MC gives us a glimpse at his Setswana heritage. Molemi tells us his life story, and just like the **** le of the album, he has a lot to say. From the well balanced, care- fully thought out content, you can almost picture Mo sitting in his farm, scripting day after day as he touches on all types of subject matter - some of which is politically charged. Amantsi is a political album that makes you think and will hopefully prompt you to act. Above all, its easy on the ear. If you're into healthy eating, this album is sure to keep you regular with tracks like 'Magnificent' featuring Kaygism, 'Molelo', 'Gud Mood', 'Footprints', Manong' featuring HHP, 'Pimpa' and 'Cover Charge' featuring Tuks. Although the album lacks the dance tunes that have made Motswako popu- lar, it still proves to be a very entertaining project. Mo'lemi's hard-hitting political raps are just as interesting and as entertaining as those of his genre mates. TTP

HHP MAFTOWN'S BRAGGING RIGHTS
Jabulani Tsambo has come a long way and he's not harbouring any thoughts of stopping now. He admits that his first two albums were influenced greatly by the labels. I wouldn't say that the albums weren't me but yes I was required to do specific types tracks, you know? With that said I always try to build my album around current activity. MCs are seen as social commentators so I just try keep up with the times. O Mang was a build- ing process and I'm still building,' says Jabba.

Jabba-man certainly knows how to represent himself. When one has a look at his videos or listens to his music, it's evident that he enjoys what he does. When speaking about his music, he refrains from heaping unnecessary pressure on himself. "I remember back in the day when I was in high school ko lin] St. Albans [boys school in Pretorial, some dudes were telling me about another MC in the city who could take me out. Everyone was like Phatbuoy (Tumis previous namel is dope and he could run rings around you. I was in a different ***** e though - I mean I've never really considered myself an MC. When I was growing up I saw myself as more an RnB artist than a rapper, he explains.

The Maftown rapper still wasn't out of the mire for that Big Poppa verse he flipped on his second album Maftown. You know how it goes, if you rap more than four lines that belong to someone else, you're a biter. To me that was a form of expression man. I wanted to show that it's possible to flip an English verse in Setswana. I come from a drama background so it was a case of taking what I've learnt and applying it. I see it as lyrical sports, even K'naan did something similar on his album', says Jabba.

The thought of a dancing rapper sounded far-fetched until Big J scooped first place on the Strictly Come Dancing show. If anyone had predicted that Jabba would win, that person would've been given direc- tions to the nearest mad-house. HHP himself didn't take the whole thing seriously in the beginning. was performing at the FIFA World Cup handover and was approached to enter the competition but wasn't interested. When they approached again I thought, why not, l'm a fat dude and will probably get knocked out early on in the competition. To my surprise we came first in the opening show and I became worried about my hip hop image. I still didn't think I'd win but I wanted to get out of there because I thought it would mess with my rep if I stayed longer', he says.

The rapper's ability to entertain went into full swing as soon as the cameras started rolling. While the other dancers seemed to be slightly intimidated by the lens, Big J loved it. 'I thought I'd get knocked out with each show because all the other cats were hot dancers. They were hot in rehearsals and I wasn't. When we were in front of the cameras, it was a different story - it's like I just came alive. I think I only started believing that we could win it after the semifinals. That's when it dawned on me that we'd be competing for the ultimate prize, explains HHP. Artists are more than happy to receive awards or any type of recognition for the work they put in. Jabba doesn't mind it but he's certainly not going to wait for the day he wins a SAMA to thank his fans. 'My latest Album, Acceptance Speech is my way of thanking my fans and everyone who's ever shown me love In Maftown we grew up watching music award cer- emonies on TV so of course I wanted to win them as I held them in high esteem. However, I had never really won them and that's how Acceptance Speech came about. Awards are a landmark and it's never really a bad thing to win them but I appreciate the love and support from fans more', he explains.

YBA2 NW went gold but Jabba isn't happy with the numbers it did. He maintains that with the buzz he had, the album should've sold even better. To be honest with you I think YBA2NW should've done better than it did. I had just won the Strictly Come Dancing competition and was sure that the label would take advantage of the hype but that didn't happen. People were checking for me and I really think we should've benefited from that. The album ended up selling around 24 000 copies which to me was disappointing. The thing with labels is that when they've made their money they rest on their laurels instead of going for broke and ensuring that the artist benefits as much as he should', he argues.

Most of you might've seen a hot dime piece tha looks like Amerie in Jabba's music video Music And Lights. Was that a hot look-alike that Jabba hac in the video? Let's suspend the player-hatin' for minute and salute. On the real though, that dime you saw on the video is the real deal - Amerie. The people voted that they'd most like to see me with an international artist in a video. I remember the day I was introduced to Amerie. She used the name Jabba' to address me and I was shocked. I turne around and was like, did you just call me Jabba? She panicked thinking she ha

FEATURED ARTIST AGREEMENTS: 6 KEY POINTS

Artist collaboration disputes have gained increasing attention in South Africa. Many big songs are plagued by disagreements over ownership, royalties and credits. Featured Artist Agreements are designed to minimise such disputes.

Here are 6 key points to look out for in a Featured Artist Agreement:

1. MASTER OWNERSHIP

Typically, the primary artist or the record label will own the copyright in the sound recording (also known as the (“master”). This is because the primary artist or the label would have paid for the making of the sound recording. It’s not uncommon, however, for parties to agree to jointly own the sound recording.

2. COMPENSATION

The primary artist and featured artist should set out their desired compensation structure. The featured artist may receive a flat fee or percentage from the sales and streaming of the sound recording or a combination of both.

Additionally, accounting periods should be clearly stipulated i.e. how often the featured artist will receive financial reports and payment. There seems to be a tendency of artists to conclude agreements that only specify their respective shares in the song without addressing the timing of payments and other aspects. This is a recipe for disaster.

3. PERSONALITY RIGHTS

A clause addressing how the featured artist’s name, likeness and personal attributes are to be used is very important in a Featured Artist Agreement. To prevent unwanted **** ociations or endorsements, featured artists should ensure that the agreement confines the usage of their name, likeness and personal attributes solely to the promotion of the song.

4. MARKETING AND PROMOTION

The primary artist or the record label will usually take the responsibility of promoting the song. However, a big part of collaboration is to leverage the featured artist’s involvement. As such, the primary artist may want to clearly define the featured artist’s participation in promotional activities such as the shooting of a music video, public appearances, interviews or social media posts related to the song. Can you imagine incurring the cost of a music video and the featured artist doesn’t show up?

5. CREDIT

Attribution is one of the most important aspects of collaboration. The agreement should detail how and where the featured artist will be credited. Crediting artists not only enhances reputation and visibility but may affect the payment of royalties. For instance, the South African Music Performance Rights **** ociation (“SAMPRA”) will want to satisfy itself of the featured artist’s participation as a performer on the sound recording prior to allocating needletime royalties.

6. COMPOSITION ROYALTIES/ PUBLISHING

The agreement should set out the featured artist's ownership share in the copyright in the composition if the featured artist made a songwriting contribution. If not, the agreement should still clearly identify the writers and their respective shares in the composition.

NOTE: The points outlined above are not exhaustive and should not be considered hard and fast rules. Every agreement is unique and should be tailored to fit the specific needs and circumstances of the parties involved. It is always advisable to seek legal advice.

Drip founder shared
In 2021 the reserve bank blocked us, meaning we couldn’t do any international payments and get our stock in the country. And in 2022 we lost R150Million, i knew the next coming months or years would be very bad.

I kept my head up high and focused on the positive and recovery. I had to halt a lot of projects and work on a new strategy that would work without any cashflow being pumped in the business.

We worked on a turn around strategy, Cut the operational costs, close some stores, liquidate some businesses and keep our eyeballs on the Footwear business.

Without product you lose a market share and trust from customers. without cash, you lose trust in employees, suppliers and potential investors in the viability of the business.

Yesterday’s deal marks hope and a very good turnaround.

A very big lesson, when you lose money, don’t lose your mind. You’ll need it to bounce back!!!

I'll never be able to fully put into words how much all this "Hip-Hop is dead" talk annoys me. Imagine all the work that event organizers do, all the writing and rehearsing that battle rappers go through, all the sleepless nights trying to get a song right as an MC or producer, all the emails we go through to find dope MCs to put on our platforms... only to have some person, who is never outside and probably still thinks Ja Rule is the biggest rapper in the world, tell us "Hip-Hop is dead".

I am literally on my way to a cypher as I type this and I guarantee you all the people who wait for MTV to tell them who their favourites should be won't be there.
