DO YOU NEED A MANAGER? Eddie Jenner, general manager of Electromode Music, explains that the role of a manager is to manage the business activities of the artist - which include, among other things, the record deal, publishing deal, live performances and endorsements. He gives the example of one of his labels hottest acts, Teargas, who approached the label through their manager.
For this work, the manager will take a percentage of all income received by the artist. A good manager will be your point of reference for questions and frustrations, and use his knowledge of the industry to hustle for the best possible gigs and rates. Some record companies find it easier to work with artists who have good managers, as the artists are more groomed and professional - and often more realistic about their expectations.
So who makes a good manager? A manager should be experienced and connected in the local industry, but you can also go far with a friend who has some business sense, is very organized, and is passionate about seeing your music career take off. So let him take that call at 8AM, and make appointments for interviews, so that you can get back to writing your next hit song

Ntsiki Mazwai Issues Public Apology Following Controversial Remarks
Poet and activist Ntsiki Mazwai has issued a formal apology for her recent comments, which sparked speculation among her followers. While she did not explicitly mention names, many believe her statement is directed at Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie and media personality Unathi Nkayi, following her criticism of the government-funded trip to Cuba.
In her apology, released on Wednesday, February 19, Mazwai acknowledged that her words may have caused “unnecessary harm and confusion.” She admitted that while her intent was to express frustration, she now realizes that her comments could have been misinterpreted or deemed inappropriate.
“I also recognize the need to be more thoughtful and responsible when discussing sensitive matters, especially when it involves public figures and important industry processes,” Mazwai stated.
The apology follows days of heated online debates, with some calling out her remarks as reckless, while others defended her right to voice her opinions.
Full Apology Statement by Ntsiki Mazwai:
APOLOGY FOR RECENT POST
WEDNESDAY 19 FEBRUARY
“I would like to sincerely apologise for my recent post. Upon further consideration, I realise that the comments made were not only inappropriate but may have caused unnecessary harm and confusion. While the intention was to express frustration, I understand that such statements can be misinterpreted or damaging, and for that, I apologise.
“I also recognise the need to be more thoughtful and responsible when discussing sensitive matters, especially when it involves public figures and important industry processes. Moving forward, I will ensure that my comments are more measured and respectful.”
“Once again, I apologise for any offence caused and will work to be more mindful in the future. Thank you for your understanding.”
Miss Nontsikelelo Mazwai
The big question now is: Will this apology be enough to settle the controversy? Or will Mazwai’s outspoken nature continue to challenge the status quo?

Robert Marawa Gives Orlando Pirates 48 Hours to Reveal the Truth About Monnapule Saleng
Renowned sports broadcaster Robert Marawa has issued a bold ultimatum to Orlando Pirates, demanding that the club reveal the truth about Monnapule Saleng’s situation within 48 hours. Marawa’s statement has sent shockwaves through the football community, as speculation about Saleng’s absence continues to grow.
The Mystery Surrounding Saleng
Saleng, one of Pirates’ standout performers in recent seasons, has been noticeably missing from matchday squads for over two months. The winger, who played a crucial role in the team’s success last season, has only made three league appearances in the current campaign, scoring twice. However, his prolonged absence has led to widespread speculation among fans and ******* ysts.
Recent reports suggest that Saleng may have been the subject of a transfer bid from a Middle Eastern club, but Orlando Pirates have denied receiving any offers. Some sources claim that internal issues may be keeping the 25-year-old winger on the sidelines, though no official explanation has been given.
Marawa’s Warning to Pirates
Robert Marawa, known for his deep connections within the football industry, took to social media and his broadcasting platforms to call out Orlando Pirates.
“We are giving the club 48 hours to tell the fans the truth. Otherwise, we will,” Marawa stated.
His words imply that he possesses inside information regarding Saleng’s situation and is willing to expose it if Pirates do not address the matter transparently. This public challenge has put the club under immense pressure to clarify the player’s status.
What Could Be Happening?
Several theories are circulating regarding Saleng’s absence:
1. Injury Concerns – Some believe the winger may be dealing with an undisclosed injury that the club has chosen to keep private.
2. Contract Disputes – There is speculation that Saleng and Pirates may be at odds over a potential contract renewal or transfer deal.
3. Disciplinary Issues – Another possibility is internal disciplinary action, though there has been no confirmation of any such incident.
4. Transfer Talks – If the rumors of a Middle Eastern offer are true, Pirates may be trying to resolve the matter behind closed doors.
Fans Demand Answers
Orlando Pirates supporters have taken to social media, urging the club to break its silence. Saleng is a fan favorite, and his unexpected absence has left many frustrated. Marawa’s ultimatum has only intensified the pressure on the club’s management to address the situation.
With the 48-hour deadline looming, all eyes are now on Orlando Pirates. Will they respond with clarity, or will Marawa be the one to expose the truth?
Conclusion
Whatever the reason for Saleng’s disappearance, transparency is key. If Pirates fail to provide a clear explanation, Robert Marawa’s promise to “spill the beans” could reveal shocking details about the club’s handling of the situation. The next two days will be crucial in determining the fate of Monnapule Saleng at Orlando Pirates.

Tyla vs. Shebeshxt: Fans Clash Over Nike Endorsement Deal
Social media is on fire as a heated debate erupts over Nike’s latest endorsement deal with Tyla. While many are celebrating the “Water” hitmaker’s huge achievement, others believe that Shebeshxt—one of the most talked-about artists in South Africa right now—was more deserving of the deal.
The Debate: Tyla vs. Shebeshxt
Tyla’s global success and growing influence in the music industry have made her a perfect fit for international brand deals. With a Grammy win, chart-topping hits, and a strong fashion presence, her partnership with Nike seems like a natural move. However, some fans argue that Shebeshxt has had a bigger cultural impact locally, resonating deeply with grassroots supporters in South Africa.
Shebeshxt’s supporters claim that he embodies the authentic street culture and raw energy that Nike often ******* ociates itself with, making him the ideal candidate for a deal. His influence in the Kasi and his unfiltered, rebellious style align with the “Just Do It” spirit that Nike represents.
Social Media Reactions
The debate has split fans into two camps:
🔥 Team Tyla – Argues that her international reach, polished brand, and global appeal make her the obvious choice.
🔥 Team Shebeshxt – Believes Nike should have embraced a more local, streetwise artist who represents the real SA hustle.
One user tweeted: “Tyla is big internationally, but Shebeshxt is the people’s champ. Nike should have picked him to keep it real!”
Another countered: “Tyla is the future. She’s putting SA on the map globally. The Nike deal makes perfect sense.”
What’s Next?
With Shebeshxt’s rising influence, could another major brand step in and give him a deal that matches his street appeal? Will Nike address the controversy? One thing is for sure—the Shebe vs. Tyla debate is far from over, and both artists continue to make serious waves in their own lanes.
What do you think? Did Nike make the right choice, or should they have picked Shebeshxt?

Riky Rick - Rehab
New artists often come and go, and Riky Rick was set for great things in the industry right? That's what we thought until homeboy went quiet. HYPE recendy got a statement from the fresh rapper who admitted to checking into Houghton House Treatment Centre on 8 December last year for a dependency on alcohol and drugs. "I went to treatment after my whole world crumbled due to my abuse of liquor and cocaine amongst other things.
In rehab I was introduced to a life changing programme to kick the addiction and claim my life back. I thought the process to recover was going to be simple but it was the mor difficult thing I've ever done. On 22 Feb, l' graduated from Houghton House and now I continue a life d sobriety at a halfway house with other recovering addicts Before I left I told people I was leaving the country, but I was just ashamed to tell people that l was sick with addiction. That shame and guile have let me now and find myselfin a position where I want to spread my story and tell the hip hop community the reality of drugs and alcohol. I can only keep what i have by giving it away", Riky told HYPE. There you have a drug-free rapper. Do the right thing peeps.

Raising The Next Generation
As hip hop artists and active headz, were not just here to have fun and drop records, were here to raise the next generation... Hip hop culture is the single most infivential youth sub-culture worldwide. I is the mos powerful way to communicate with young, people worldwide, In fry experience, the young adults of today have been raised by their parents or guardians, extended family, reachers as well as uncles Chuck D, Rakim, RZA and Snoop, not forgetting big, brothers Pac, Big, Canibus, MI, Stick Man and the POC family. Depending on your tate of course, it could have been Snoop who taught you the difference between a lady and a... well you figure it out. Chuck D may have opened your eyes to the teachings of Malcolm X and Steve Biko. For those who were old enough. POC got you standing in line to vote in "94 and helped you celebrate victory over the oppressor. Canibus trained your mind to become a sharper, more lethal weapon while Rakim gave you the confidence to say "here I am." ld like to speak to the big name artists for a change. To a lot of kids watching TV. listening to radio, copping your albums, seeing you on the scene and reading these articles... you are their heroes. They look up to you and want to be just like you. You have a responsibility to positively inspire them. They walk, talk, rap and dress like you, and subscribe to everything you subscribe to because you are opinion leaders. As much as clothing labels become popular to them through your endorsement, your lifestyle become desirable to them.
To the many of you setting a good example, keep it going, but to those of you who aren't. please check yourself. To the fans and aspiring artists... especially the younger generation - stay in school, stay away from drugs, stay focused and please take only the positive aspects of the culare. As hip hop, we have always spoken about the positive and negative equally, in order to educate ourselves and others about the realities we face in our communities. We are a thinking people, and the single most influential youth sub-culture worldwide. Right now, this drug problem is decaying our minds and eroding what has been built by our pioneers. Come on! Keep your head up! This is more just music. And we are more than just producers, rappers, graf artists, b-boys. beat boxers and Djs, we're the leaders of a generation, and we are here to help raise the next generation. I was raised by my parents, extended family and teachers, but there were certain lessons that couldn't be taught in school and at home, and which were taught to me by the music. Let's keep this in mind and keep it moving, Peace.

Hip hop culture is about knowledge of self, attaining a high level of awareness, teaching, learning and giving back to your community. It's about bringing about positive change and passing these values on to the next generation of headz.

Jay-Z denies devil worship claims Amidst claims that Jay-Z was somehow linked to the Illuminati, he releases the video "On To The Next One", which just fueled the fire. Besides the luminati link, the symbolism in this video lead certain Internet bloggers to believe that Jigga worships the devil. The video features images of ram skulls, black crows, strangely aligned crosses and other dark imagery. Since late 2008, there have been speculations of Rihanna being a worshiper of the devil, especially since vigilantcitizen.coms ****** ysis of her song "Umbrella". Jzy-Z. being Rihanna's mentor and close friend, would naturally be linked to all of this. Jigga recenty dismissed all online claims, calling them "silly" and "ignorant". In an interview with US radio station Hot 97, Hova said the following "I don't know where it started. I don't know where it came from. I really think it's really silly. For the record, I of course believe in God, but I believe in one God. If people must know my religious beliefs, I believe in one God. I don't believe in religion. I don't believe in Christians or Muslims. I think all that separates people. I ****** it's one God. I think it's all the same God, and I don't believe in ****** . Am I a part of some sect or cult! That sounds stupid to me. It's ignorant to even say, and I guess that'll be the last time I address that. It's ignorant to me

AKA imterview after winning Best Newcomer ln 2010 hype magazine awards
BEST NEWCOMER AKA
New Kid
Born in Cape Town and moving to Sec in 1996, AKA exploded into the scene as part of then teen sensation Entity, whose greatest achievement was their Kora Award nomination. Now the holder of the HYPE Awards' Best Newcomer crown, we hear what this dude has to say.
Why do you think you took Best Newcomer?
Because I am the best newcomer! Duh! I mean in terms of fresh new acts in '09 I was unmatched. I was most talked about, most loved and most hated. Plus I ran a mean-a*s voting campaign. Shout out to all my voters by the way.
What separates you from the other nominees?
Well I'd like to say chat we all had our own lif styles and whatever: I mean L-Tido and Maraza are so far apart in term of style, which I think was fresh because it showed that the category was varied. Although It's about how you handled your biz in '09, I never underestrated the strength of a strong campaign.
Your crack "Do It" really blew up. What's the importance of that one big song?
That song and its remix really put me out there in terms of me as a solo artist A number one single on 5fm is on everyday occurrence for hip hop in this country. From that one song I did so many Gigs.
What is the importance of this award?
Let's just say the corporates are gonna take me a lil more seriously now.But seriously, lts nice to have the racognition from the people who support our local scene. for it's a matter of "on to the next."

Brown Dash took a short break from recording his new album, Back to Kasi, to talk to Mshana about his industry journey
Ayoba', I shout when I finally meet Siphiwe Mpamile, AKA Brown Dash, of Phans' Komthunzi Welanga
fame, outside his studio in Wilgeheuwel. By the time I found it, I had spent close to two hours searching for his house in this quiet suburb in Roodepoort. Kasi to suburbs: it's been a long journey for Brown too. When he was growing up in Zola, Soweto,
long before he even considered a career in music, the kwaito star dreamed of becoming a police officer. I grew up in a rough area, where crime was heavy. I didn't want criminals around, I only wanted to arrest them, he says. However, he saw how gangsters got the respect of some youngsters in the community and admits that that this tempted him. Life wasn't easy for us
and I didn't have enough money to go to tertiary. It was bad, and I did crime stealing cars, but I was never arrested.
When I ask him what made him change his ways, I expect to hear about a fellow criminal getting shot, or arrested, but Brown's answer takes me by surprise. When you do something and your heart is not there, you'll never be free. As long as
you know you stole, that guilty conscience follows you, and I didn't like it. Music was on my mind all the time.
Brown's big break in music came after he had left his criminal ways, when childhood friend Mapaputsi featured Brown doing two lines on his hit song Izinja. Before that, Brown's only experience
had been entertaining locals at school events. It was my biggest break,' he smiles. I was scared as it
didn't was my first time working with a ted
white producer ,, he (D-rex).
The track became a big hit, (D-rex).' The track became a big hit, and people started recognizing Brown Dash. He also featured on Mzekezeke's first album, Sguqa, in 2003. Brown says even though he wasn't ready, he had no choice but to record an album, as people were demanding to hear more of him.
He signed with DJ Sbu's TS Records and released his debut album, Puff and Pass, which was produced by DJ Cleo. This was followed by Mthandazo Wabolova (which won a best-album SAMA in 2005) and Dashboard. Brown left the company earlier this year, but remains positive about their role in shaping his career. 'It was a blessing to work with Mzekezeke. The whole team at TS records was the best.' Brown has also formed his own company, Dash-line Entertainment.
One of his aims is giving kasi youngsters a chance to record their music, because he knows about the
struggles they face when approaching companies with their demos. 'Everything relating to the company is falling into place. Our aim is to do talent searches, as no one wants to do it. I's not easy for •
companies to accept demos, they get many of them. It will be easier for me to get talent, as guys can easily approach me. I believe in people with
self-confidence and I will listen to them and advise them on what needs to be done, he says. They just need to be different and creative' Owning a company comes with its own challenges, he found. 'To be responsible is hard. You need to be sure of what you do and be a hardworking individual. However, I learnt from them that it is in your hands to make it work.'
There have also been changes to his personal life - he recently got married, and has moved to the suburbs. I think one needs to be ready for this type of commitment (marriage) as we (artists) are always on the streets. As long as you have someone who understands, it is easy,' he says. And how has he adjusted to the suburbs? You get used to the life, but it is not easy because it is expensive,' he explains. The worst thing about the suburbs is that you don't have neighbours like ekasi. Some of them have an attitude, and are suspicious of us. When I ask whether living in suburbs has changed him, he smiles. 'I don't think so. I took kasi and put it in the suburbs!'
Brown sees a strong link between kwaito, and the township. To him, kwaito epitomizes kasi life, which is why he is always in the townships doing research for his next songs. I know we can teach people through kwaito. Each and every day, kasi people help to inspire my music.' Brown Dash is recognized as one of the artists who has pushed
kwaito to new levels, while still keeping the sound kwaito-lovers can relate to. His style is faster than
earlier kwaito and has thumping beats that make use of very creative production. I ask him whether he feels kwaito is under threat from other styles, such as hip-hop. *People feel like kwaito is dropping because producers have the same beat. I think if people can be more rative. kwaito will never die.. It's kasi people's pride, he says.
